Jenny Chapman MP

Syrian Refugees

With refugee families from Syria due to arrive in Darlington, Jenny asked Justine Greening, the Secretary of State for International Development, why it is taking so long for them to get here.

Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox had asked the Minister to make a statement on besieged communities in Syria and Jenny took the opportunity to ask Ms Greening this:

“The local authority and charities in my constituency are willing, ready and able to take refugees, but they are being told by the Home Office that none will arrive in our region until April. Why that delay, and can she do anything about it?

"The minister replied: "We are, of course, relocating people from the region, saving them from having to put their lives into the hands of the people smugglers. The hon. Lady raises the issue of her particular local authority. I am not familiar with the details, but I am happy to make sure that the offer made is followed up and responded to.”
